Using Chilescope.com, scientists of the IKI RAN were able to observe the merger of two neutron stars. The photographs were able to detect the presence of gravitational waves - one of the main scientific discoveries of recent years.
- Project's goal
Project's goal is to enable amateur and professional astronomers from all over the world to explore space with only internet access.
- What does the system do?
The system: Plans photography: checks the position of the shooting object in the sky and the availability of the telescope at the booking time. Controls the movement of domes and telescopes (opening, equipment output into positions). Uploads ready-made astrophotographs to the user's personal account. Accepts payment for filming through Paypal.
- How does the system control the telescopes?
Management is carried out through integration with other astrograms: The ACP Observatory Control Software telescope motion control system (via a Web API application); A photography control system on Maxim DL 6 telescopes; A driver for controlling the domes of the ScopeDome LS observatory; A driver for controlling the AutoSlew telescopes mounting.
- Two types of astrophotography
Shooting in deep space It is the main type of services of the Chilescope, which allows you to photograph stars, galaxies and nebulae. It is performed by the system automatically. Planetary session It is shooting the planets of the Solar system. It is booked on the website to take into account the workload of the equipment, but is performed manually by the operator of the telescopes.
- Implementation features
Work on the project included immersion of developers in the subject area: Using the spherical coordinate system and star maps of Cartes du Ciel (an online planetarium that marks most astronomical objects). Controling the observation object position during shooting (optimal visibility of the object is achieved when its height is more than 30 degrees above the horizon). Working with image files in the FITS format, which is used in astronomy for storing, transmitting and editing images with their metadata. Visualization of weather parameters (cloud sensor, temperature, humidity, pressure, wind direction and speed) and photo/video data from webcams.
